The seminar is taking place at Camp Gites, a caravan and camping park near Menesplet in the Dordogne (department 24).
Exclusively hired for our 4 day programme, Camp Gites offers all martial artists the chance to train in a relaxing and serine environment in the beautiful Aquitaine region of the South of France.

Come and participate in our 4 day Martial Art Training Camp in the South of France, surrounded by like minded people in a relaxed, calm, secure and friendly environment. With emphasis on training all aspects of Traditional Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu, including “Chi Sao” (Sticking Hands both exercise and fighting applications), forms and fighting applications, weapons, wooden dummy and an open sparring tournament, this training camp offers something for everybody including the kids at the weekend.

This is a “Training Camp” not just an open tournament, world renowned Grandmaster Samuel Kwok AKA “the Wing Chun Evangelist” will be teaching and demonstrating Traditional Ip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu over the 4 days.

Following the “Enter the Dragon” theme there will also be an open sparring tournament with bouts taking place daily, semi-contact with amateur and pro categories so that participants at all levels will be able to compete with the final rounds and overall winner being declared on the last day of the camp.

For Wing Chun and weapons training there will be a wooden dummy or two on site, 6 and a half point poles and butterfly knives. There will also be Escrima sticks and basic staffs, however guests are invited to bring their own weapons if interested in cross training, which we would strongly recommend due to the diversity of styles and experience of some Martial Artists attending the event.

In addition to the programmed training there will be a “Conditioning area” with wall bags, kick bags, iron palm, leg stretch, sunken posts, sand, water and gravel drums, boards/tiles for hard Qigong breaking, stones and plenty of trees for hard Qigong.

If you have never tried your hand at breaking or would simply like to find out more about conditioning your body correctly we invite you to make full use of these facilities, who knows, if everyone is feeling competitive, we may get one or two practitioners testing their skills against one another.

Training the body externally is essential in all martial arts, during our seminar we would like to offer participants the opportunity to explore their “internal” selves in our “Meditation Marquee” where correct breathing and meditation techniques can be learnt and practised during your stay.

Daily morning Qigong sessions to awaken body, mind and soul will set you up for the days training, this is by no means compulsory but will be very beneficial for all martial artists attending camp interested in learning this ancient art developing higher realms of awareness, internal strength and well being.

We encourage all participants to train with one another during the 4 day event, the exchange of knowledge and skills amongst Martial Artists is something that should be promoted, by training with and learning from one another we can improve our own skills and understanding, remember :
“Advance daily throughout your life, becoming more skillful today than yesterday“.

This is a never ending process..

He first studied Gulao (Pien San) Wing Chun at an early age in mainland China under his first teacher Fong Yee Ming, who himself had learnt from Wong Wah Sam who had learnt from Leung Jan.

Lee Shing was inspired to research the different styles of Wing Chun, he therefore, researched, & went on to study under Fung Sang who was one of the central points of Pien San Wing Chun, having studied under his father Fung Lim and his uncle Koo Siu-Lung (both students of Wong Wah Sam). He then went on to learn from the famous Kung Fu Master Ng Jung , Lee Shing moved to Hong Kong where he met and became friends with two Wing Chun experts, Lok Yiu and Jiu Wan. They were two of the four leading practicioners of Wing Chun in Hong Kong who became known in Wing Chun circles as the four ‘Kings of Wing Chun’. The other two were Leung Sheung and Tsui Shan Tin. It was not long before an exchange of styles took place between Lee Shing, Lok Yiu and Jiu Wan. While working, an older gentleman entered wearing the traditional Chinese dress. Lee Shing noticed that the others greeted the man very respectfully, so much so that he was curious to know who he was. It was then that the stranger was revealed to be none other than Grandmaster Yip Man, the teacher of the ‘four kings’ of Wing Chun; In-fact Lok Yiu, a former master of another kung fu style, was Grandmaster Yip Man’s first student in Hong Kong.

Lee Shing was formally introduced by Jiu Wan to Grandmaster Yip Man. At the time Grandmaster Yip Man was teaching Wing Chun in Hong Kong’s Restaurant Workers’ Union. Lee Shing was fortunate enough to be accepted by Grandmaster Yip Man as a student and received instruction privately from him on a one-to-one basis. He was known only to Grandmaster Yip Man’s senior students and later to Grandmaster Yip Man’s eldest son Yip Chun. Over the years, Lee Shing learnt the complete Wing Chun system. He had mastered the three hand forms, the wooden dummy form, the six-and-a-half point pole form and most importantly of all Grandmaster Yip Man had taught Lee Shing the complete butterfly knife form and its applications. This last form was of particular importance as it represented the highest point of learning in Wing Chun. At the time Grandmaster Yip Man had taught only three people the complete knife form.

He was allowed to open up a school on Hong Kong Island in the early 50s – with the opening ceremony being conducted by Grandmaster Yip Man himself. It was at this time that Lee Shing met Yip Chun who had resumed his studies in Wing Chun. The two became firm friends and henceforth when Yip Chun came to England, he would always stay at Lee Shing’s home. Grandmaster Lee Shing with his student Joseph Cheng was a key figure in promoting the art of Wing Chun at this time. He had begun studying under Grandmaster Lee Shing in 1965 and was the first person to teach Wing Chun openly in the U.K., opening the first Wing Chun School in Europe in 1970. In 1976, with Grandmaster Lee Shing’s blessing, Joseph Cheng wrote the first book ever published on the hitherto secret techniques of the wooden dummy form of Wing Chun called ‘Chong Woo Kwan Wing Chun’ – The Art of Simultaneous Defence and Attack’. Grandmaster Lee Shing brought Wing Chun to Europe and was a major influence on the development of Wing Chun in the western world, for many years Grandmaster Lee Shing had a close friendship with Grandmaster Yip Chun, eldest son of Yip Man. There was great mutual respect on both sides. After Grandmaster Yip Chun’s arrival in Hong Kong from China they were introduced in the famous Yang’s restaurant by Grandmaster Yip Man. Whenever he visited the U.K. Grandmaster Yip Chun would visit Grandmaster Lee Shing and stay in his house as an honoured guest to discuss amongst other things the further promotion of Wing Chun in U.K. and Europe.

Though he was always one to shun the spotlight, the late Grandmaster Lee Shing should be given full credit for bringing the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun to United Kingdom. Thanks to him, a whole new generation of kung fu instructors have spread the art far and wide. Those who trained under the grandmaster are many and varied. They include Hau Bin Sum, Chan Man Kune, Joseph Cheng, Eddie Yeoh, Sam Kwok, Simon Lau, Nigel Fan, Austin Goh, Joseph Man, Kenny Chan and, of course, Joseph Lee.

The History of Wing Chun is outlined below. This account of the origin of Wing Chun Kung Fu was written by the late Grandmaster Ip Man.

Wing Chun History

The founder of the Wing Chun Kung Fu System, Miss Yim Wing Chun was a native of Canton [Kwangtung Province] in China. She was an intelligent and athletic young girl, upstanding and forthright. Her mother died soon after her betrothal to Leung Bok Chau, a salt merchant of Fukien. Her father, Yim Yee, was wrongfully accused of a crime and, rather than risk jail, they slipped away and finally settled down at the foot of Tai Leung Mountain near the border between Yunan and Szechuan provinces. There they earned a living by running a shop that sold bean curd.

During the reign of Emperor K’anghsi of the Ching Dynasty (1662-1722) Kung Fu became very strong in the Siu Lam [Shaolin] Monastery of Mt. Sung, in Honan Province. This aroused the fear of the Manchu government [a non-Chinese people from Manchuria in the North, who ruled China at that time], which sent troops to attack the Monastery. Although they were unsuccessful, a man named Chan Man Wai, a recently appointed civil servant seeking favor with the government, suggested a plan.

He plotted with Siu Lam monk Ma Ning Yee and others who were persuaded to betray their companions by setting fire to the monastery while soldiers attacked it from the outside. Siu Lam was burned down, and the monks and disciples scattered. Buddhist Abbess Ng Mui, Abbot Chi Shin, Abbot Pak Mei, Master Fung To Tak and Master Miu Hin escaped and went their separate ways.

Ng Mui took refuge in the White Crane Temple on Mt. Tai Leung [also known as Mt. Chai Har]. It was there she met Yim Yee and his daughter Wing Chun from whom she often bought bean curd on her way home from the market. At fifteen, with her hair bound up in the custom of those days to show she was of an age to marry, Wing Chun’s beauty attracted the attention of a local bully. He tried to force Wing Chun to marry him, and his continuous threats became a source of worry to her and her father. Ng Mui learned of this and took pity on Wing Chun. She agreed to teach Wing Chun fighting techniques so she could protect herself. Wing Chun followed Ng Mui into the mountains, and began to learn Kung Fu. She trained night and day, until she mastered the techniques. Then she challenged the bully to a fight and beat him.

Ng Mui later traveled around the country, but before she left she told Wing Chun to strictly honor the Kung Fu traditions, to develop her Kung Fu after her marriage, and to help the people working to overthrow the Manchu government and restore the Ming Dynasty.

After her marriage Wing Chun taught Kung Fu to her husband Leung Bok Chau. He in turn passed these techniques on to Leung Lan Kwai. Leung Lan Kwai then passed them on to Wong Wah Bo. Wong Wah Bo was a member of an opera troupe on board a junk, known to Chinese as the Red Junk. Wong worked on the Red Junk with Leung Yee Tei. It so happened that Abbot Chi Shin, who fled from Siu Lam, had disguised himself as a cook and was then working on the Red Junk. Chi Shin taught the Six-and-a-half-point Long Pole techniques to Leung Yee Tei. Wong Wah Bo was close to Leung Yee Tei, and they shared what they knew about Kung Fu. Together they shared and improved their techniques, and thus the Six-and-a-half-point Long Pole was incorporated into Wing Chun Kung Fu. Leung Yee Tei passed his Kung Fu on to Leung Jan, a well known herbal Doctor in Fat Shan. Leung Jan grasped the innermost secrets of Wing Chun, attaining the highest level of proficiency. Many Kung Fu masters came to challenge him, but all were defeated. Leung Jan became very famous. Later he passed his Kung Fu on to Chan Wah Shan, who took me and my elder Kung Fu brothers, such as Ng Siu Lo, Ng Chung So, Chan Yu Min and Lui Yu Jai, as his students many decades ago.

It can thus be said that the Wing Chun System was passed on to us in a direct line of succession from its origin. I write this history of the Wing Chun System in respectful memory of my forerunners. I am eternally grateful to them for passing to me the skills I now possess. A man should always think of the source of the water as he drinks it; it is this shared feeling that keeps our Kung Fu brothers together.

Is this not the way to promote Kung Fu, and to project the image of our country?

- Ip Man

GM Ip Man

Grootmeester Ip Man

Zijn broer was Gei Gak (Grootmeester Ip Man werd origineel Gei Man genoemd). Zijn zuster was Wan Mei (Sik Chung).

1899 to 1905 (Ching Kwong Shui). Grootmeester Ip Man 6 tot 12 jaar.
Plaats: Fut Shan.

Grootmeester Ip Man begon Wing Chun Kung Fu onder Chan Wah Shun (Geldwisselaar Wan).
1905 (Ching Kwon Shui). Grootmeester Ip Man 12 jaar.
Plaats: Fut Shan.

1905 to 1907 (Ching Kwon Shui). Grootmeester Ip Man 12 tot 14 jaar.
Plaats: Fut Shan.

Ng’s school was in Sin Huen Gai Street. In Ng’s school waren toen Yuen Kei Shan, Yiu Choi (Yiu Kei’s vader) en anderen.

1908 (Ching Kwon Shui). Grootmeester Ip Man is 15 jaar.
Plaats: Hong Kong.

Grootmeester Ip Man 16 tot 21 jaar.
Plaats: Hong Kong.

Grootmeester Ip Man 21 tot 44 jaar.
Plaats: Hong Kong – Japan – Fut Shan.

In Ip Man’s grote tuin werden vele ideeën uitgewisseld over de Wing Chun stijl.

1937 (Man Kwok jaar 26) Grootmeester Ip Man 44 jaar oud.
Plaats: Fut Shan.

De japanners vallen China binnen.

1937 tot 1945 (Man Kwok jaar 26 tot 34) Grootmeester Ip Man 44 tot 52 jaar.
Plaats: Fut Shan.

1945 (Man Kwok jaar 34) Grootmeester Ip Man is 52 jaar.
Plaats: Fut Shan.

Japan geeft zich over.

1945 tot 1949 (Man Kwok jaar 34 tot 38) Grootmeester Ip Man 52 tot 56 jaar.
Plaats: Kwong Chow, Fut Shan.

1949 (Man Kwok jaar 38) Grootmeester Ip Man is 56 jaar.
Plaats: Macao and Hong Kong.

1950 tot 1953 (Man Kwok jaar 39 to 42) Grootmeester Ip Man 57 tto 60 jaar.
Plaats: Hong Kong

Studenten hier waren Lee Wing, Yue May Keng, Lee Leung Foon en anderen.

1953 tot 1954 (Man Kwok jaar 42 tot 43) Grootmeester Ip Man 60 tot 61 jaar.
Plaats: Hong Kong.

Ip Man gaf ook privéles te Three Prince Temple in Yue Chow Street. Studenten waren Lee Hong en anderen.

1954 tot 1955 (Man Kwok jaar 43 to 44) Grootmeester Ip Man 61 tot 62 jaar.
Plaats: Hong Kong.

Sifu Austin Goh

Austin Goh grew up in Malaysia where he gained a strong foundation in the martial arts. He left his home town in Malaysia for England in the early seventies to continue his academic studies. It was there that he set up his first Wing-Chun school in London and has since expanded into Europe.

Austin has also travelled extensively around the world giving demonstrations and lectures in Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

Sifu Austin Goh was taught wing chun by his master, Lee Shing. Sifu Austin Goh was a closed-door student and spent many years training with his master. Now Sifu Austin Goh is the only successor to be still teaching the Lee Shing Lineage which includes center line Wing Chun, Pien San Wing Chun and Dai Lim Tao.

Lee Shing was the first Chinese master to bring Wing Chun to the western part of the world.

Austin success as a teacher in the martial arts is due to his friendly and open-minded teaching methods which have gained him the respect and loyalty of his students. He teaches that anyone who wants to succeed in any martial art must be prepared to work hard and be determined to achieve this goal, and he leads in this respect by his own example.

Austin was the first Malaysian Chinese wing-chun teacher in Europe to teach not only Bil Jee (wing-chun’s third form) but also the pole form, wooden dummy form, and the Butterfly Knives.

Austin feels that there should be no secret formulas or techniques in any style of martial art. He believes that as times change, so must the arts – what worked 300 years ago might not be practical now, and so the training systems and principles must change to suit our modern life. For anything to survive, it should be taught openly and properly.

In 1983 Austin appeared on the British television programme “Just Amazing” where he gave a chi demonstration. In an awesome display of chi strength, he set a new world record by breaking fifteen four-inch concrete blocks on his chest with a sledge-hammer weilded by one of his students.

He also stunned the audience by breaking two concrete blocks against the side of his head with a sledge-hammer!

After this performance, the audience nicknamed him the “Iron Man of wing-chun”.
